Somnath Temple

The eternal shrine on the Arabian Sea — first among the twelve Jyotirlingas.

About Somnath Temple

Standing on the western shore of Gujarat, Somnath is revered as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the eternal abode of Lord Shiva. Destroyed and rebuilt seven times across millennia, the present limestone spire rises 155 ft above the Arabian Sea, gilded by sunsets that seem to pour through the Garbhagriha itself.

The temple's name — Somnath, the 'Lord of the Moon' — comes from the legend of Chandra (the Moon God) who built the original shrine in gold to seek release from a curse.

We coordinate priest-assisted abhishek puja at the inner sanctum, pre-booked seating for the evening sound-and-light show, and a quiet pre-dawn darshan when the temple is at its most ethereal.
