Ujjain's pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti — Shiva as the Lord of Time itself.
About Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is one of the most sacred Jyotirlingas — the only one where Shiva is depicted as 'Dakshinamukhi', facing south. The temple is celebrated worldwide for its astonishing pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, when the Linga is bathed in sacred ash to mark the awakening of the Lord of Time.
The temple sits on the banks of the Shipra river — one of the seven sacred Moksha-puris of Hinduism and a Kumbh Mela city.
